Dennis R. Smith is the Founder and President of Computer Business Solutions, Inc. a privately held business and software consulting and training company. Dennis, a native of Dallas, graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BBA in finance and minor in economics. After being recruited by Exxon he furthered his education and graduated with a perfect GPA from Pepperdine University with his MBA.
Dennis’ desire to make a difference at the companies he serves was evident early in his career while working for Exxon in IT and as a Senior Financial Analyst where he personally designed and developed Exxon’s mainframe database for tracking all development and expenses for Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. He then automated many functions within the accounting department with a new concept, spreadsheets.
After earning his MBA and being recruited by Peat Marwick (now KPMG), he further showed his initiative and forward thinking ability as their 5th consultant in their newly created Mergers and Acquisition group, and then at Columbia / Tri-Star Pictures as Director of Forecasting and Joint Venture Accounting.
While Dennis respected and enjoyed working for these companies, he was still driven to apply what he had learned at school and in business to achieve meaningful improvement at companies he serves, and so he founded Integrated Business Services (IBS) in 1988. The company’s mission: “To help improve clients’ growth and profitability with effective implementation, training, and support of industry leading business management software” was so successful it provided Dennis the wherewithal to relocate back to Dallas in 1991 with his family.
Based on his success at IBS, Dennis founded Computer Business Solutions, Inc. (CBSi) in 1991 in Plano, Texas, and implemented Sage Accpac and Great Plains accounting software. Finding limitations with these packages, the company went on to become the first Navision Solution Center in North Texas in 1996. After finding no limits with Navision’s programming source code, Dennis focused CBSi on what is now Microsoft Dynamics NAV. His team has a unique expertise improving processes and implementing Dynamics NAV out-of-the-box, as well as designing custom Dynamics NAV solutions to adeptly solve many unique, but real world business issues for CBSi’s clients. He takes pride in being able to honestly say that CBSi has yet to encounter a client request that the company’s experienced consulting and development team could not solve. As a result of this strong dedication and determination, CBSi has become the leading Microsoft Dynamics NAV Solution Center in the region.
Dennis always knew he wanted to make a significant impact on business, but his vision also includes the belief that this should be accomplished in an environment where everyone (clients, employees and vendors alike) is treated according to the Golden Rule, and where employees are given opportunities to succeed and be compensated based on their impact to the organization. Following this philosophy, his clients’ many successes over the past 23 years are proof that this equation does work with the right guidance and leadership.
Dennis is an Eagle Scout and an active supporter in his community and faith, making the special balance of business, family and community his priority. Recurring recipients of his support, in addition to his church, include Bryan’s House, Love for Kids and Hope’s Door, supporting disadvantaged children and protecting at-risk mothers.
Along with strategizing to improve the business and lives of people, Dennis enjoys tennis, boating, skiing, and more recently zip-lining. He resides in Plano, Texas with his wife and three children.
